India is a land of Unity in diversity. In geographical sense also one can see all kinds of landscapes in India starting from the mountains to the small islands of ocean. Our place of interest today is one such place located in an small island in Indian Ocean named Rameshwaram. The place called Dhanushkodi is located around 19 km from the heart of Rameshwaram.

The road leading to this place is called ‘the last road of India’ because this the the farthest point of Indian mainland and after this road there is an open ocean. It is said that the village Dhanushkodi which is now a ghost town was once a puzzling village with even a railway station. The village/town was destroyed during the 1964 Rameshwaram cyclone and has remained uninhabited since then. The Tamil Nadu government has officially declared this place as a ghost town and settlement in this place is prohibited.
Off late the place has become a popular visiting spot for tourists and locals due to its history as well as its natural beauty.

History of the Dhanushkodi
According to the legend Dhanushkodi is the place where Lord Ram built a bridge with his army to cross the ocean and rescue Goddess Sita who was held in captivity by Ravana. After returning from ‘Lanka’ Lord Rama Crowned Vibhishana as the new king of Lanka and broke the bridge with his Bow. This is the reason this place is called Dhanushkodi which means ‘End of the Bow’.
However along with its rich history Dhanushkodi is also a place of great natural beauty. The ocean on both side of the road is a sight to behold. One can just sit and relax and the beach of the shore for quite some time. However the only downside is that it gets quite crowded during the day time.

Overall Dhanushkodi is a place to visit for those who want to see the nature at its very best, see the farthest land from India towards Sri Lanka and delve into the stories of Ramayana.
