The Viceroy’s Insignia

With its inaugural run on 16 April 1853, Railways in India embarked on a journey of massive expansion. During the 19th century in a country as vast as India trains were the primary mode of transport both for the rich and poor alike. Hence in order to distinguish the train carrying a VIP an Insignia was usually attached to the train.

The Railway Workshop located in Jamalpur( Present day Bihar) has the distinction of being first and oldest Railway Workshop in India. The Workshop was opened on 8th February 1862 as part of East Indian Railway Company and is operational till date.
