Surprise Encounter With Buddhist Caves in Adrai Trek

India is a land of Religious and Cultural Diversity. India is home to origin of 3 religions viz Jainism, Buddhism, and Sikhism. Hence if you wonder around the countryside in India you are very likely to come across many religious monuments. Some of these monuments are in good condition others are not in a very good conditions.

The rock cut architecture in India started from 3rd century BC and India has many great rock cut monuments at present. The Ajanta Caves and Ellora Caves are a testimony for the peak of Rock cut architecture in India. However many small rock cut caves especially in Maharashtra region are still seen. Prime example being Bedse, karle and Bhaja Caves in Lonavala region of Maharashtra.

During my recent visit to Malshej Ghat while I Was hiking in the famous jungle trail of Adrai, I came across two historical monuments which were in pretty bad state with no one to look after them. Both these monuments belong to ancient rock cut architecture era. The state of these two monuments speaks volumes about the conservation effort of our country. Both the monuments belonged to Buddhist Architecture and are part of ancient buddhist cave architecture which were build in Western India during the Expansion phase of Buddhism.

A Buddhist Cave(Fully immersed in Water)
An Ancient Temple(Said to be built by Pandavas)

The indian culture and heritage is known and respected across the world. It is these monuments which give a good name to the country to the world. Hence it is the collective responsibility of society as a whole to preserve them for coming generations.
