A Plaque on Nagpur Railway Station…

Nagpur is perhaps one of the most interesting cities in India. It is the headquarter of Rastriya Swayam Sevak Sangh(RSS). Deekshabhoomi where Dr Ambedkar embraced Buddhism with approximately 600,000 of his followers mainly scheduled caste peoples on Ashoka Vijaya Dashami on 14 October is also located in Nagpur. It is also the place where few congress sessions were held during India’s freedom Struggle.

I have very good memories of Nagpur Railway station. It is the place where I first got posted after completing my training in Indian Railways. Once While travelling via train through Nagpur station I came across this plaque. The plaque describes the visit of Gandhi ji to participate in the Nagpur Session of Indian National Congress in 1920 and the message of Gandhiji from the Nagpur Session of Congress.

According to the information displayed on the plaque It was during the Nagpur session of Indian National Congress that ‘Self Rule’ was discussed as an aim of India’s freedom Movement. It was in the Nagpur session that the constitution drafted by Gandhiji was adopted. Gandhi ji gave a call for using Charkha as a service to the nation and community in the Nagpur session.

One interesting connection to note here is that the Sevagram Ashram of Gandhiji is located merely around 80 km from the city of Nagpur.
